It’s not exactly a New Year’s honor, but a Belize City man does have the distinction of being the first to be convicted of theft in 2015. Today twenty-three year old Lincoln Moralez appeared in court number two, where he was charged stealing a cell-phone belonging to one of his relatives. It happened on New Year’s Day, when the relative claims that she left her cell-phone, valued at eighteen hundred dollars, inside her uncle’s car while socializing at his house. Her uncle, accompanied by Lincoln Moralez, went to a Chinese store in the car and that’s when Moralez allegedly made the acquaintance of the phone. When the car returned and the owner checked, she noticed her phone was gone and Moralez throwing something into the canal. In court today, Moralez pleaded guilty to Theft, and admitted that it was indeed the phone that he threw in the canal because he got frightened when he was questioned. For the guilty plea, he was fined six hundred dollars to be paid by February twenty-eight. He was also ordered to pay compensation to his relative for the phone, but since it’s only fifty dollars every two weeks, we figure it’s not much in the way of consolation for the complainant.
