Magistrate Sherigne Rodriguez this morning found a San Pedro family of four not guilty of the charge of possession of six rounds of unlicensed ammunition. This matter came to public prominence because of the unpopular gun laws that require automatic detention of anyone charged. The Nasser family: Jaziba, Nazim and their two children Jamil and Hilal were charged and sent to prison last October. The mother of two was at the time eight months pregnant when she was taken to prison. But she was fortunate and received an early bail and gained her freedom within a week of being remanded. In the two-day trial, the prosecution for the Nasser family was taken over by the officer in charge of San Pedro police, Superintendent Luis Castellanos, who presented the police evidence which consisted of the testimony of two of five police officers who conducted the search of the Nasser home in October last year. All members of the Nasser family took the witness stand. They testified that the safe in which the ammunition was said to have been found had been recently purchased. When it was delivered to the Nasser residence, only Jaziba was present, but in court, it was not clear if the bullet was hidden in the safe. Attorney Dickie Bradley also submitted that the information presented in the charge sheet initially had changed when the Nasser case came up. The magistrate handed down a lengthy decision highlighting the law as it relates to knowledge and the lack of evidence in regards to the opening of the safe as well as who was present when the ammunition was found. When they exited the courtroom, the Nasser family was clearly overwhelmed.
