Over the weekend, the torture of a sixteen-year-old boy was videotaped and the recording went viral on Facebook. The post and its subsequent circulation drew the ire of children’s rights activists, the Police Commissioner and many others who voiced their disgust and condemnation. Just before noon today, one of the accused in the case, Elvin Smith, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser on charges of kidnapping and wounding. He was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May eighteenth.
Oliver Sutherland
That is when his suspected partner in crime, Oliver Sutherland is expected to be arraigned on the same charges. Sutherland was arraigned on Monday on a separate charge of being a member of a street gang and was remanded due to the nature of the offense. A third person who was detained, Axia Sanchez, was released after the police decided they would not charge her.
