A Belize City mom is behind bars tonight over a stolen cell phone. According to Robert Powell Junior, he visited Alicia’s Shop on Pitter Street to buy on Friday and placed his Samsung Galaxy cell phone valued at six hundred dollars on the counter. He paid for his purchases and left the store but forgot the cell phone. When Powell Junior realized what had happened on his way home, he went back and found that the owner could only speak Spanish. Powell says he was approached by twenty-nine-year-old Tina Herbert who offered to get him back the phone for one hundred dollars. He paid her twenty-five dollars, but the phone was not returned so Powell reported it to police. But Herbert told police that she had the phone, but gave it to someone to sell. She pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft and told Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer that it was in fact her son who stole the phone and gave it to her. While there was no objection to bail, the Chief Magistrate was sufficiently disturbed by the facts of the case that she denied bail in the first instance for three days. Herbert returns to court on Friday, April thirteenth, for consideration of bail on the charge.
